Breathtaking Views from Our Favorite Hotels

Cape View Clifton Cape Town, South Africa

The suites at Cape View Clifton include one sea-facing room on each floor in a converted private home right above Clifton Beach. They’re the perfect summertime Cape Town lodging, with wide covered patios, sitting areas next to the glass doors that open out to the Atlantic, white-on-white bathrooms, and big walk-in closets. There is tons of natural light, and it’s quiet and scenic.

Hotel Palazzo Manfredi Rome, Italy

For ladies who lunch, the best view of the Colosseum is found on the rooftop restaurant at the Hotel Palazzo Manfredi in Rome, which will forever stay alive in my mind. Situated right across from the iconic monument, you can enjoy a chilled glass of prosecco while soaking in the amazing view.

Belmond Hotel Caruso Ravello, Italy

Original frescos and wisteria-laden gardens abound at Italy’s Belmond Hotel Caruso in Ravello, but the best spot is by the infinity pool, where the spectacular sunsets are best enjoyed with a fresh Bellini in hand.

Solage Calistoga Calistoga, CA

One of my favorite hotels for simply lounging around is the Solage in Calistoga, California. The bungalow-style rooms come equipped with a private terrace, hot tub, and views overlooking vineyards and the pool. If you do leave your room, you can take the hotel’s vintage-style bikes on a ride in the Napa countryside or walk around the grounds, which are covered in olive trees and fountains.

Peninsula Chicago Chicago, IL

Once fully relaxed at the Peninsula Chicago’s Zen spa, repair downstairs to the Shanghai Terrace where the dumplings and skyline views are divine.

Hotel Vitale San Francisco, CA

Rooms at the Hotel Vitale in San Francisco have dramatic views of the Bay Bridge’s nighttime light installation. It’s like seeing a modern art show from your room.

Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis St. Louis, MO

The rooms facing the iconic Gateway Arch at the Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis are epic.

Ventana Inn & Spa, Big Sur Big Sur, CA

The best way to take in views in Big Sur, where redwoods meet the ocean, is from the newly renovated Pacific House rooms at the Ventana Inn & Spa. The Japanese-inspired decor, fireplaces, and hot tubs are just the right nod to luxe at this unapologetically hippie-chic property.

Hotel Santa Caterina Amalfi, Italy

There’s probably a compound German word for the feeling you get standing by the window in your room at the Hotel Santa Caterina on the Amalfi Coast, overlooking terraced lemon groves and the Mediterranean (the hotel clings to a cliff above the sea). The English word is bliss.

Georges Hotel Galata Istanbul, Turkey

The balcony rooms in the back of Istanbul’s Georges Hotel Galata are high on a hill, with vast views from Asia across the Bosphorus to Topkapi Palace and all the way to the Golden Horn.

Vigilius Mountain Resort Lana, South Tyrol, Italy

The snowcapped fir trees and purple-pink Dolomites beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows of the rooms at the Vigilius Mountain Resort, outside Lana in Italy’s South Tyrol, are out of a fairy tale.

Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo Taormina, Sicily, Italy

Set on Mount Tauro and abutting an ancient Greek theater, the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, in Taormina, Sicily (our cover subject this month), probably has the most dramatic prospect on the island, looking out over Mount Etna and the Bay of Taormina.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Big Island Big Island, HI

At the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel’s restaurant, you sit high above the water and, at dinner, watch mantas swooping in to feed under the spotlights.
